Abstract
Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is a rare di- sease that is a variant form of chronic pyeloneph- ritis. It affects usually middle aged women and unilateral kidney. Bilateral xanthogranulomatous pye- lonephritis is extremly rare. 8 cases of bilateral xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis were reported in the world. Its etiology and pathogenesis have been unclear. Some important precipitating factors, such as chronic urinary tract infection, obstructive uro- pathy, urinary calculi, are suggested to play essential roles, Its confirmative diagnosis is achieved by pathologic finding. At light microscope, lipid-laden macrophage called as foamy cell and multinucleated glant cell are characteristic findings. We experieced a case of renal failure due to bilateral xantho- granulornatous pyelonephritis in a 12 year-old girl and reported it with a review of the literature.
