Abstract
Bentazon was developed as herbicide in 1968. To- xic effect of bentazon was reported predominantly in respiratory system, suppression of CNS and imm- unologic system in animal model. We report 39 year-old male patient with liver cirrhosis who even- tually developed azotemia after ingestion of Bentazon for suicide. A day after ingestion of 800 mg/Kg of bentazon, azotemia was developed and then aggr- avated following 2days. 7days after ingestion, his plasma creatinine level retums to normal(1.2 mg/dL). During the course of renal failure his urine output was about 1000cc per day and fractional excretion of Na(FENa) below 1%. We conclude that a large amount of bentazon may cause acute renal failure, and present intrarenal vasoconstriction as possible mechanism of renal fail- ure because there was no active sediment or protein in patients urine during the course of azotemia.
