Abstract
Mannitol is known as metabolically inert alcohol and osmotic agent. It is widely used to reduce in- tracranial and intraocular pressure, to convert oligu- ric to nonoliguric ARF, and used as a diuretic agent in an attempt to prevent acute renal failure(ARF) in surgery. And now, it has been published that pati- ents with underlying renal impairment are more susceptible to mannitol intoxication due to decreased excretion rate. We report herein a case of mannitol induced- acute renal failure and intoxication occurred in a 55-year old female patient with cerebral infarction. Her baseline serum creatinine and BUN were normal. Mannitol was prescribed to reduce intracranial pressure. Mannitol induced-ARF with increased osmolal gap and clinical signs of mannitol intoxi- cation were developed and treated successfully by early HD.
