Abstract
Neurologic events, especially cerebrovascular eve- nts in renal transplant recipients are cornmon and potentially life-threatening. However, the survey on stroke in renal transplant recipients in Korea has rarely been reported. To further delineate the risk factors of stroke among renal transplant recipients, we reviewed our experience on the patients with stroke after renal transplantation. Records of 878 patients who underwent renal transplantation at Catholic University Medical Center from March 1969 to December 1993, were reviewed. The following results were obtained. 1) 16 among 878 patients(1.8N) had stroke after renal transplantation. 10 had cerebral infarction and 6 had intracerebral hemorrhage. 2) Their age at the tirne of transplant ranged from 26 to 51 years(mean age=36.8) and they were generally older than the non-stroke population. 3) Most events developed 2 years after transplant. But 2 cases occurred during early post-transplant period. 4) The occurrence of stroke was influenced by the status of blood pressure and graft failure, but not by serum cholesterol and sugar level. 5) 6 out of 16 patients(37.5%) died of stroke. Miortality was relatively high in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage.
