Abstract |
The clinical observation was made on 70 cases of renal tuberculosis in Kyung Hee University Medical Center from January 1980 to December 1988. The results were summurized as follows. 1) Male to female ratio was 1.1:1. The patients age ranged from 11 to 68 years and the peak incidence was in 3rd (29%) and 4th (27%) decade. 2) The major presenting manifestations were non- specific ones such as vague flank pain (41%), hematuria (39%), urinary frequency (24%), painful urination (19%) and so. 3) Urinary findings revealed pyuria (79%), proteinuria (56%), and hematuria (54%). 4) Direct smear for AFB in morning concentrated urine was postive in 17 cases (26%) and smear negative but culture positive result was noted in 8 cases (129). 5) The intravenous pyelographic findings in 57 cases of renal tuberculosis were nonvisualization (54%), calyceal destruction (46%), ureteral stricture (12%), delayed visualization (11%), hydronephrosis (5%), and cavity formation (4%). Nine case (16%) were affected in both sides, 22 cases (39%) in the right and 24 cases (42%) in the left side. 6) Past or present extrarenal tuberculosis was noted in 34 cases (49%); 22 cases (64%), pulmonary tuberculo- sis and 8 cases (24%), bone tuberculosis. 7) Patients were treated by chemotherapy (53%, chemotherapy with nephrectomy (33%) and chemother- apy with reconstructive surgery (11%). |
