Abstract
Severe hyperglycemia may develop in kidney trans- plant recipients during immunosuppressive therapy with cyclosporine A (CyA) and prednisolone (PDL). Severe hyperglycemia developed in 3 of the 23 kidney transplant recipients treated with CyA and PDL but in none of the 32 patients treated with AZA and PDL. In two patients CyA was converted to AZA or cyclophos- phamide and normoglycemia is maintained without insulin or oral hypog)ycemic agents. The remaining one patient continues to use CyA and normoglycemia is maintatined with the use of oral hypoglycemic agent. It appears that CyA is directly responsible for the hyperglycemia in some patients and that reduction of CyA dose or conversion to other immunosuppressive agents may correct the hyperglycemia in these patients.
