Abstract
The objective of this study was to define some causes of T lymphocyte dysfunction in patients with glomer- ulonephritis. Periperal blood mononuclear cells (PBM) from 21 patients were stimulated to produce IL-2 and compared with controls. PBM of patients with nephrotic syndrome, especially membranous nephropathy and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, produced lower levels of IL-2 than the normal controls. The production of IL-2 in patients with minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) were variable; PBM from 4 of 7 patients produced higher levels than the normal controls. Sera from 7 patients with MCNS inhibited the production of IL-2 as compared with nor- mal pooled human sera. These findings suggest a pathogenetic relation between the inghibitory effect of sera on IL-2 production and the impaired cellular immunity in patients with MCNS.
