Abstract
To evaluate the significance of serum HBeAg in HBsAg-associated glomerulonephritis, we analyzed 101 patients with serum HBsAg-positive glomerulonephritis. The clinical, laboratory, and pathologic findings were compared between 32 serum HBeAg-negative and 69 serum HBeAg positive patients. The following results were obtained: 1) There was no difference in clincal findings, clinical course and most of the laboratory findings except CH,, reduction. 2) Serum HBeAg positive group showed higher in- cidence of (1) reduction of complement CH,, (2) capillary changes such as duplication and/or thickening on light microscopy (3) capillary deposition of IgG, IgM on immuno- fluorescence microscopy (4) subendothelial electron dense deposit on elec- tron microscopy. From above findings, it is suggested that HBeAg may play a role in the morphological changes of capillary wall in HBsAg associated glomerulonephritis.
