Abstract
The MCV and the RDW of urinary red blood cells were measured using Coulter counter model S Plus IV in 53 children with severe hematuria since September 1988. The patients were divided into 2 groups as the one having glomerular disease and the other with nong- lomerular disease. The results were as follows: 1) The patients with glomerular disease had a MCV significantly lower than that in the patients with nong- lomerular disease (71.22±8.11 fl vs. 87.55±4.70 fl; p=0. 00 (t=9.45). Also the patients with glomerular disease had RDW significantly higher than that in the patients with nonglomerular disease (28.08±10,20 fl vs. 13.37± 2.82 fl;P=0,00(t= 7.46)). 2) There was a significant correlation between MCV and RDW of the urinary RBC (y= - 0.70108x +77. 11453, r= 0,66934, p=0,0000). 3) The MCV of urinary RBC revealed no correlation with either the MCV of peripheral venous blood or the urinary specific gravity. In conclusion, the measurement of MCV and RDW of the urinary red blood cell using Coulter counter model S Plus IV would be helpful as a primary routine noninvasive screening test in children with hematuria for the differentiation of the origin of hematuria.
