Abstract |
Hypertension and atherosclerosis are among the most common complications and the major causes of death in end stage renal disease. Therefore, the changes of hemodynamics, numbers of antihypertensive drugs and physical activity by Karnofsky score were studied retrospectively in 64 continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients (CAPD group), 70 hemodialysis patients (HD group) and 66 renal transplantation patients (TP group). In comparison with initial blood pressure (165±29/ 98±18 in HD, 158±24/98±19 in CAPD and 153±22/97± 14 mmHg in TP group), blood pressure was decreased significantly on the 3rd month of therapy (154±21/89± 14, 147±22/90±15 and 132±16/77±12 mmHg, respecti- vely, p <0 005). On the 3rd month numbers of antihyper- tensive drugs were decreased in TP, CAPD and HD group in descending order of numbers. Considering initial value as 100, the cardiothoracic ratio was de- creased significantly to 92.6 in TP compared with 93.3 in CAPD and 97.3 in HD group on the 6th month (p<0.05). After average 14.6 months of dialysis or renal trans- plantation, electrocardiogram was improved in 32.6%of TP, 17.7% of CAPD and 6.7% of HD group. Percentage of patients whose Karnofsky scores belonged to a and b scale were 100% in TP, 88% in HD and 80.6%. In CAPD group (p<0.005). These results indicate that the hemodynamics and physical activity of end stage renal disease patients were improved in TP, CAPD and HD group in that order of significance. |
