Abstract
Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I and -II are a family of peptides that help to mediate the growth-promoting effects of GH on cartilage. These peptides circulate in seurm bound to specific carrier proteins (IGF binding proteins, IGFBP,). Altered serum IGF, and IGFBP, in chronic renal failure have been described. We measured serum IGF-I by radioimmunoassay (RIA). IGF-I was seperated from IGFBP, by Sephadex G-50 acid chromatography. IGF-I levels were 70.9±15.1ng/ml (mean± SE) in acute renal failure (ARF), 175.8±33.9 ng/ ml in chronic renal failure (CRF), and 106.9±15.6 ng/ml in end stage renal disease (ESRD), while IGF-l level in control subjects was 175.8±8.5ng/ml. To evaluate IGFBP, pattern in uremia, we did Western Ligand Blot (WLB). The significant decrease of serum IGFBP-3 was observed in patients with ARF and ESRD. Hovever, we couldnt find any significant change of IGFBP, in chronic renal failure. The decreased level of serum IGF-I and alteration of IGFBP, in ARF and ESRD may influenced the availability of IGF-I in kidney, and may play a role in the pathogenesis or progression of renal failure.
