Abstract
Magnesium lithospermate B (LS) has been isolated from Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix as a biologically active component which improves renal function. The present study has been designed to confirm the definite mechanism that LS improves renal function through the activation of prostaglandin (PG) system in the kidney, using kallikrein inhibitor (I.e. aprotinin), LS caused significant marked increases in renal functional parameters concomitantly with a markedly increased urinary excretion of PGp, creatinine, sodium and kallikrein. However, pretreatment with aprotinin blunted the LS-evoked renal responses. These results suggest that the renal function- facilitating action of LS is attributed to the activation of PG system which is mediated by alteration in kallikrein-kinin system.
