Abstract
The responsse of intraocular pressure (IOP) to hemodialysis was investigated in 35 patients with end stage renal diseasse undergoing regular hemodialysis. IOP, Pog and blood osmolality were measured before hemodialysis and at hourly intervals for 4 hour during hemodialysis. Blood pressure and body weight before and after dialysis were also determined. IOP was decreased during initial 3 hours after beginning of dialysis, 12.16, 11.15, 10. 5S, 10.40 mmHg, when checked at hourly inetrvals and then rised to 11.58 mmHg at 4 hours after hemodialysis, which was slightly lower than that of the before- hemodialysis. The change of IOP for initial 3 hour and last 1 hour interval were significant statistically. There was a loss in body weight because of fluid loss. Blood osmolality decreased markedly in a linear fashio. PO was increased markedly initial 1 hour interval and then kept plateau during hemodialysis. Using simple regression analysis, the initial drop of IOP was correlated with body weight loss, the rising of IOP after 3 hour hemodialysis was correlated with hypoosmolality and inversely correlated with body weight loss, all of these correlations were statistically significant. This study suggests that the fluctuations of IOP during hemodialysis were most likely dependent on the dynamics of dehydration and hypo-osmolality.
