Abstract
In 1981, the Korean Society of Nephrology started annual report on renal replacement therapy in Korea. The annual number of new patients receiving dialysis treatment in 1988, compared with 1987, rose from 1597 patients (38.0 per million population) to 1891 patitents (45.1 per million population) and the total number of patients on replacement therapy rose from 3405 patients (81.0 per million population) to 5142 patients (122.7 per million population). 3102 patients (74.0 per million popu- lation) of these patients were living on hemodialysis, 1058 patients (25.2 per million population) on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and 982 patients (23.4 per million population) on functioning renal graft as of December 31, 1988. The common causes of renal failure of new patients were chronic glomerulonephritis (24.1%)ollowed by diabetic nephropathy (11.4%), hypertensive nephroscler- osis (5.0%) polycystic kidney (1.7% and others. The common causes of death in patients on dialysis therapy were cardiac (40.6%)vascular (21.0%) infection (13.8%) and social problems (5.1%.). Recently, the number of patients requiring dialysis therapy is rapidly increasing due to expanded medical insurance support for dialysis and improved economic status of our country. Therefore, It is necessary to draw up counter-plan for a rapid growth of the number of new patients.
