Abstract |
In order to assess the alterations of cell-mediated immunity in patients with end-stage renal disease, the mitogenic response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and interleukin-2 (IL-2), one of lymphokine, productivity of lymphocytes were measured in the pre-dialysis uremic patients (n=13), patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis (n=19) and CAPD (n=13). 1) The mean age was 37.8 years and the male to female ratio was 4:1. The duration of dialysis was 21.1 months (mean) in HD group and 17,5 months in CAPD group. 2) The interleukin-2 production of peripheral blood lymphocytes in uremic and hemodialysis patients was increased, compared to control and CAPD groups (M± S.D., 16.7±11.7unit/ml, 14.1±11.0unit/ml vs 5.6±2.5 unit/ml, 8.0±5.3unit/ml, p<0.05). 3) With respect to the lymphocyte mitogenic response to PHA, all patients groups did not show much different stimulation indices from that of control group (M S.D., 801.8±322.3, 885.1±435.9, 822.3±435.0 vs 974.9±436.8, p>0.05). 4} There was no significant correlation between IL-2 activity and mitogenic response to PHA of peripheral blood lymphocytes (r=0.25). From the above results, it seems that there is an increased interleukin-2 production of peripheral blood lymphocytes in pre-dialysis uremic and hemodialysis patients, compared to continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients or noraml subjects. |
