Abstract
A retrospective analysis was made on 1,072 epis odes of urinary tract infection following urinary bladder catheterization in 621 patients admitted to Kyung Hee University Hospital between January 1974 and may 1981. Fifty percent of the infection occurred within 5 days of bladder catheterization, 60% was observed in patients older than 50 years of age, and 65% in patients with cerebrovascular accident, head injury, and spinal injury. Pseudomonas rseruginosa was the most comrnon organism in male and E. coli was most common in female and "ll patients. Gram negative organisms were most susceptible to amikacin and gentamicin while gram positive organisms were most sensitive to cephalosporins. Urinary tract infection by Serratia Acimetobacler and Klebsielta peeur.oniae showed increased incid- ence and infections due to E. colI and Enlsrobacter decreased frequency during the period of 1980~1981 comparing to period of 19741976. In conculsion, urinary catheterization should be avoided in high risk patients and, if unavoidable, great care should be taken to prevent urinary tract infection.
