Abstract
Acute renal failure persists as a major compli- cation following open heart surgery which involve total body perfusion and carries a grave prognosis. During a 18 months period, January 1978 through Jun 1979, 66 consective patients of congenital heart diseases underwent open heart surgery on one cardiovascular surgery at Severance Hospital. Eleven cases of 66 consecutive patients, under- went open heart surgery, developed acute renal failure. The incidence of ARF was related to the duration of perfusion and there was increased incidence when the duration of perfusion exceeded 2 hours. Death occurred in 9(82%) of the 11 cases of acute renal failure.
